Originally from Minnesota, Sean followed in his father’s footsteps and became an Eagle Scout at 17. Sean experienced remarkable adventures with Boy Scouts, many including his father Mike. From a 7 day backpacking trip through the rugged northern New Mexico wilderness to dog mushing in Alaska, Sean and his dad shared once-in-a-lifetime experiences together.
Being by and in the water was always a big part of Sean’s life. He was a PADI-certified Rescue Scuba Diver, a swim instructor and swim school manager for over a decade, and a boating enthusiast. Since moving to Florida, Sean fell in love with boating, enjoying his days on the water with his family. In true Sean fashion, when he really loved something, he went all in. He loved to scuba, so he become a rescue diver. He loved to boat, so he got his boating license. He loved to swim, so he shared that passion with countless others through his teaching and mentorship.
Sean’s spirit was one of kindness and generosity, which was reflected in everything he did. Helping others was at the core of who he was. It was this calling that lead him to pursue a career as a first responder. Sean was a volunteer Firefighter with Hastings Fire Department. When he moved to Punta Gorda, FL during the 2020 pandemic to be closer to his family, he began attending Paramedic school and working as an EMT so he could return to Firefighting in Florida; it was his dream and he was on his way to achieving it.
Everything Sean did – from his focus on learning new skills to how he chose to work out – was to achieve his dream of being a full-time Firefighter. He was dedicated and focused. In fact, tragically, he was killed by a drunk driver while returning home from his paramedic class. A dream and a life ended far too soon. In our hearts, we know Sean would have succeeded. The tragedy lies not only in the loss of Sean’s life but in the countless lives he certainly would have saved throughout his career. A family friend shared a sentiment in the days following Sean’s passing that encapsulates who Sean was:
“There is no one else I would have wanted running in to save me or my kids than Sean. He was selfless and just so caring.”
Sean is survived by his parents, Mike and Kathy Maguire, sister Shannon Maguire, and beloved dog Ozzy.
