Dick became a paramedic later in life, entering the profession with humor and blunt honesty, once telling his interviewers, “None of these questions matter, I’m 55 years old, you’re not going to hire me.” Despite that, he was hired that day and went on to become an iconic presence at Empress Ambulance. Known for his steadiness under pressure, Dick responded to some of the most difficult calls in the company’s history, including a devastating multi-fatal motor vehicle crash and a tragic incident involving firefighters in Yonkers. His ability to remain calm amid chaos earned him the nickname “Hurricane Harvey.” He was respected for his experience, leadership, and resilience in the field.
