Bill Akers had a 40+ year career in EMS in Southwest VA. He was one the original volunteer flight paramedics that began the Virginia State Police Med-Flight II program in Abingdon, VA, in 1987. He later became the program director over the local community college’s EMS program. In that role, Bill helped train many EMS providers and indirectly touched thousands more patients. He was recently recognized by the VA governor for ‘EMS Excellence,’ and has received many other recognitions over the years. He’s survived by his wife, Cherie, two children, Bethany & Nathaniel, and two grandchildren.
